Physical Description

The Bat Star features short, broadly triangular arms, with a radius reaching up to 10 cm. Its aboral surface is smooth, lacking large spines or pedicellaria. The coloration of the Bat Star is extremely varied, ranging from red, orange, mottled buff to blue. It’s not uncommon to find individuals with 6 or 7 arms.

Habitat

This species is ubiquitous along the eastern Pacific coast, being the most abundant sea star in the Monterey region. It can be found on rocks, sand, and mud.

Geographical Range

The Bat Star is found along the eastern Pacific coast, ranging from Alaska to Baja California.

Diet

It is an omnivorous detritivore and scavenger, feeding on a variety of organic matter.
