Physical Description
The Leather Star exhibits arms with a radius extending up to 12 cm. Its aboral surface is smooth and slick, devoid of spines or pedicellaria. Typically gray-green, bluish, or tan, it may feature patches of red or orange. Notably, it emits a strong, distinctive garlic or sulfurous odor.
Habitat
This species is commonly found on rocky substrates along the eastern Pacific coast.
Geographical Range
From Alaska to Baja California, the Leather Star inhabits a broad range along the western coast of North America.
Diet
Feeding primarily on cnidarians such as Epiactis prolifera and Corynactis, the Leather Star also consumes a variety of motile invertebrates, including sea cucumbers and sea urchins.
