Physical Description
The Thornback Ray features a flattened body with a distinctive array of thorn-like projections along its dorsal surface. Typically, it measures between 50 to 70 centimeters in length.
Habitat
This species prefers shallow coastal waters, often inhabiting sandy or muddy bottoms, estuaries, and nearshore reefs, typically at depths ranging from 10 to 100 meters.
Geographical Range
The Thornback Ray is found along the eastern Pacific coast, ranging from Alaska to Baja California.
What They Eat
As a benthic predator, the Thornback Ray feeds on a diet consisting mainly of crustaceans, mollusks, and small fishes that it captures using its specialized dentition.
